Climate change has intensified water scarcity and risks to agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean, exacerbating environmental degradation and food insecurity. Population growth and food demand have driven more intensive agricultural practices, increasing pressure on water resources, of which agriculture consumes more than 70%.
With the aim of promoting the implementation of innovative technical irrigation practices and the adoption of sustainable strategies for water use in agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Platform of Latin America and the Caribbean for Climate Action on Agriculture (PLACA) held a series of four webinars on technified irrigation and efficient water use in 2025.
This document summarizes the main topics covered in this series of webinars, identifying the challenges for efficient water management in agriculture, the proposals made by the speakers, and the lessons learned and conclusions drawn from the process.
